<<Set majestically in the rugged mountainous beauty of Central Otago in the South Island of New Zealand, this privately owned producer is committed to enhancing the environment with both their organically certified estates and winery and their ‘hands on‘ involvement in the conservation of New Zealand’s native birds, the Saddleback and Mohua. The stunning Peregrine Winery building has won international awards and accolades for its design and construction, which evokes the wingspan of a Peregrine falcon as it glides on thermal air rising from the heated land.
The complex was commissioned for business in December 2003 and has enchanted people from around the world ever since. Winning awards from London-based Architecture Review magazine and the NZ Institute of Architects, the changing roof gradient, which appears to rise from the valley floor, was inspired by the kinetic rotation of a bird in flight. Even within the context of its rugged and dramatic natural landscape, the building soars above its surrounds like an elegant blade of light. Its simple industrial character is overlaid by a translucent rising roof canopy unifying ‘front’ and ‘back’ of house. It retains its sense of place by using materials similar to those seen in neighbouring rural buildings, and is designed to make best use of space and light.
As ‘home’ to Peregrine Wines – Wines with Altitude – the building reinforces the winery’s dedication to producing world-class wines and the company’s ongoing commitment to the work of the Wingspan Trust in preserving endangered species of native birds. Located in the beautiful a valley of vines, Peregrine’s Cellar Door offers an exceptionally unique experience.
From a historic rustic woolshed to a modern, architecturally designed winery, the stunning grounds will capture you immediately. Upon arrival, you will notice our contemporary building with a striking falcon’s wing inspired roof, under which the semi underground tasting room is situated. With a floor-to-ceiling glass wall that frames a view into our barrel hall, it is certainly a stylish setting to taste wine. You are also welcome to take a stroll amongst the barrels and take in the lingering aromas of Pinot Noir and French oak.
Our Cellar Door team are knowledgeable and passionate about our wines and ready to introducing you to the full Peregrine range, or can customise a tasting to your individual preferences. Peregrine is an artisan producer of hand crafted wines, with a focus on Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Riesling together with other varieties not typical of Central Otago. Since its first vintage in 1998, Peregrine has gained a reputation for producing consistently awarded wines and has become one of New Zealand’s most iconic brands. We look forward to sharing these wines with you. We are situated 20 minutes from Queenstown along Highway 6 towards Cromwell. Our Cellar Door is open daily from 10am to 5pm (except Christmas Day, Anzac Day morning and Good Friday). We do require bookings for groups larger than 6 people.
Gatherings of up to 3000 people can be comfortably catered for at this unique location, as can smaller conference groups and corporate events. Our historic 1860s Woolshed exudes rustic charm, beautifully framed with schist stone walls and exposed wooden beams. An original establishment of Peregrine, the Woolshed can be easily styled as a unique place to host your next event. The Under-the-Wing is a new development in the award winning Peregrine Wines story, offering a facility to host premium events and functions, setting itself apart from other venues in the Queenstown area. Custom made for the winery by Baytex the leading designer and manufacturer of marquees, the Under-the-Wing has been designed to dovetail seamlessly under the existing winery roof, itself a striking piece of architectural design inspired by a bird’s wing in flight. The Under-the-Wing features large removable floor to ceiling, wall to wall clear panels which take in expansive mountain views and a modular design to cater for smaller functions or up to 180 guests. The Under-the-Wing is a memorable and picturesque venue, the perfect setting for your gala dinner or next corporate event. At Peregrine we are a venue only hire facility providing you with a blank canvas and the flexibility to design any event, in our beautiful majestic setting and stunning views amongst the vines.>>
